Independence Day Costume Ideas

Independence Day is a big deal in the United States. Celebrating the birth of a nation free from the reigns of British monarchy, the holiday is celebrated with parties, barbecues, and fireworks. Why not join the festive fun with an outfit, too, especially one that can be repurposed for Halloween when the time arrives.

When it comes to the 4th of July there are plenty of options for clothes. Stores of all stars and stripes love to advertise and sell outfits, t-shirts, hats, even socks with American flag-like designs. Finding some of these at a thrift store, or waiting after the fact to cobble together a Halloween costume, ensure that you can celebrate in style without breaking the bank. Besides, odds are the outfit will get splattered with sparks and sauce anyway.

For those willing, able, and ready to go the distance, to truly embrace the season and dress up as Uncle Sam himself, the option is there and ready for those with vision. Such outfits are easy enough to create; the costume is iconic, after all.

Fake beards, stars and stripes pants, and a matching shirt should all be easy enough to find. Whether you piece it together from a thrift store or purchase a pre-made costume, enjoy the festivities and make sure your beard doesn't catch on fire.

There are plenty of options for women, too. Since the 4th of July is in, well, July, the sumer weather makes it much easier to find comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothes with plenty of patriotic flair. Whether it's a stars and stripes tank top and skirt, or blue pants with a red vest, the colors are common and easy to find just about anywhere. Clothes with a blue background and white stars are easy to find too, especially in the lead up to the season.

If you want a little extra patriotic flair and some white to go with the red and blue, a patriotic wig adds an excellent touch if it isn't too hot. A hat will not only look festive, but also protect against the sun. Uncle Sam style hats work great for this; just watch your head as they tend to be on the tall side.

For cooler weather, such as Halloween, or a July costume party, consider dressing up as the Statue of Liberty. Finding a green gown-like costume is easy enough, and if you need to cobble the clothes together form a thrift store or costume shop online, you'll have plenty of time between July and October.
