For a successful Halloween bash for family and friends you'll need fun party games and of course bloodthirsty treats. Here's a few ideas from our Halloween Book for making really gross looking snacks.

Bloodthirsty Recipes

• Spaghetti Brains

Spaghetti brains is a favorite food among kids and adults that works for Halloween. It looks and feels creepy if you put the spaghetti into a shell-like bowl. Be sure to add real thick tomato sauce that looks like blood. Be sure to tell your kids that it's real brains inside the bowl just to freak them out. It's a disgusting, yet fun Halloween activity.

• Jell-O Brains

A gross looking recipe that uses Jell-O is "yucky brains" (one of our personal favorites). To create "yucky brains", you need to place cheese in a bowl, add berries to the cheese (mix them up good), then add food coloring.

Now add Jell-O (I prefer the color blue) onto a plate, pour blueberry syrup on it for extra flavor, then add the mixture of cheese and blueberries, from before. You've now created a brain that looks disgusting, but tastes great. This recipe will surely be a hit with your kids, or served at your adult Halloween party.

Since Jell-O comes in multiple colors, you can use your creativity to create many different Halloween treats. Try mixing multiple colors together. When you use gelatin, you can definitely make some interesting Halloween treats that taste great.

• Blood Orange Punch

Fruit punches are staples of many parties, so why not add some additional festive fun into the mix. A blood orange punch is an easy addition with a holiday twist for all ages. The most basic of recipes is a mix of two parts cranberry juice, one part orange soda, mixed with sugar and lemon juice to taste.

For a "bloody" effect, adding shots of grenadine to glasses will add red color and some sweet flavor. For those seeking a more mature taste, add vodka, either regular or flavored, as desired. Just make sure it's clearly noted as such if the party has mixed aged company. Don't worry about the grenadine -it's completely alcohol free.

• Bloody Vanilla Cupcakes

Cupcakes are a fantastic treat for pretty much any occasion. Regardless of the flavors involved, adding a spooky twist to enhance the mood or make them seem creepily appropriate for the Halloween season is a lot easier than people might think- just add blood.

Not real blood, obviously. Adding an edible bloody effect to any cupcake recipe isn't that hard, but it will take some finesse and steady hands. A mix of raspberry jam, food coloring, and a bit of hat water is an easy option. Alternatively, cornstarch, corn syrup, food coloring, and some water as needed.

Regardless of how you make the blood-gel, to apply it will need an icing syringe, which can be found online or at any store with a decent kitchen section. In a pinch, a plastic storage bag with the tip snipped off will work, but it will also be a lot messier. Either way, apply the blood along the top and sides of the cupcakes as desired to achieve the proper effect.
